Now Paul shows that God's love is, in a sense, inexhaustible. It turns out, loving as Jesus loves is hard. More precisely, those who love as Christ does set themselves aside to meet the needs of other Christians. After reading Paul's letter, it cannot be said that these 14 descriptors are true of the Corinthians' treatment of each other.Īs Paul has piled on descriptors to show what Christian love does and does not do, it has become clear that love sets itself aside for the good of others. The Greek word used for love, agape, describes God's unconditional love for His children and how He intends for us to love each other. For whoever shall do the will of God, that one is My brother, and My sister, and mother" (Mark 3:33, 35).Paul is coming to the end of his concise description of what true love looks like. When he was told his family came to see him he stated, "Who is My mother and who are My brothers?. One day, when Jesus was teaching, his mother Mary and brothers came to visit him. The phrase "kindly affectionate" comes from the Greek philostorgos (Strong's Concordance #G5387) which is a loving friendship-family relationship. The King James translation states that Paul taught that those who are true Christians should, "Be kindly affectionate to one another with brotherly love, in honor giving preference to one another" (Romans 12:10). Here is where the Greek word Storgay is compounded with the word Phileo to form a special kind of love. We must follow up our feelings with actions if we are to pleasing to our Creator (Romans 13:10).īesides keeping all God's commandments, the true church of God is to have a special family relationship. Paul tells that have feelings of love is not good enough. Therefore, we see that loving him and our fellow man manifests itself by keeping his commandments (see 1John 5:3). God is also our neighbor in the universe (Jeremiah 12:14). The first four commandments of God's law tell us how we are to treat Him.
